Chapter 189
Coll Harrow
also called Sergeant of the Last Muster, the Roll-Keeper
The Vandahl mine-levy sergeant who was ordered to hold the Weeping Adit's lower pit, never relieved and never paid; his company stands still because he has no discharge to dismiss it by.
Coll Harrow was a shift-boss in House Vandahl's silver works before a lean-year order pressed him and his crew into a 'temporary' levy to hold the lower gallery. The order was never rescinded, the relief never marched, and the wage was never paid — Harrow's own name sits in the paymaster's ledger among the unpaid. He held the pit until the water took it, and holds it still: a sergeant will not dismiss a company he has no written discharge for, and no officer of the House ever gave him one. He keeps the muster roll in his hand and the ranks drawn up around the muster stone, waiting on a relief order three hundred years late. He is not cruel and he is not mad. He is on duty. Only the discharge the House owed him will let the muster — and Harrow — stand down.
