Durgal ran the Weeping Adit for eleven years before the spring broke its lowest wall and a buried company stood up behind the water. He got the crew out by sounding the shift bell until the dead followed its ringing instead of the miners. Now he keeps two chalk counts at the mouth: the water's rise and the number of skeletons seen below. House Vandahl has answered with another letter about confidence. Durgal wants the gallery cleared, the survey instrument recovered, and his people back on paid ground before the mine becomes only a story about why nobody should have worked there.
