Vandahl Timberwork

House Vandahl builds in blackened oak frame over pale lime-washed infill — tall gabled halls, carved bargeboards, and silver-leafed heraldic beams that outshine the treasury behind them. Every joint is pegged, never nailed; every lintel carries the house knot. It is the architecture of a house spending its last wealth on appearances, and it is genuinely beautiful for it.

Vandahl timberwork descends from old Imperium frame-building carried into the Vale when the house took the silver rights. The frame is the ornament: oak blackened with pine-tar against the valley damp, raised in tall close-set bays so a hall reads as a run of vertical strokes, infilled with lime plaster the household re-whitens every spring — a house that cannot afford new construction can always afford whitewash, and the contrast of black frame on white field is the house's visual claim to order. Roofs pitch steep against snow, gable-forward to the street, with carved bargeboards whose patterns name the branch of the family that raised them. The silver shows in restrained places: leaf on the crest-beam over the principal door, on the weathervane, nowhere structural. Interiors are frame-honest — exposed beams, galleried halls, the hearth set against the party wall rather than centered, because a Vandahl hall is arranged to be LOOKED AT from the door. Where the Asheni build as if the fire is the point, the Vandahl build as if the visitor is.
