Vandahl Ashlar

The dressed grey stone House Vandahl raises its CIVIC seats in — the keep, the moot-hall, the toll-gate — as distinct from the timber it houses its people in. Coursed ashlar with a fluted string-course and a single silvered lintel-knot over the door, inherited from old Imperium frame-and-course building. Where Vandahl timberwork spends the house's last wealth on the street it lives on, Vandahl ashlar spends it on the seat the house governs from: the stone that is meant to outlast the family.

When House Vandahl took the silver rights it took the Imperium's stone-masons with them, and the two traditions never merged: the house builds its dwellings in tar-black frame and whitewash (concept.vandahl-timberwork), but it raises anything that must READ as authority — the keep, the moot-hall, the gate that takes the toll — in coursed grey ashlar. The stone is quarried square, laid in even courses with a fluted string-course marking each storey, and finished with the one indulgence the house allows itself in stone: a silvered lintel-knot over the principal door, the same house knot the timber halls carry in carved oak. The effect is deliberate. A traveller reads the timber street first — busy, black-and-white, human — and then the ashlar seat rising over it, grey and coursed and permanent, and understands without being told which of the two the house expects to survive. It is the architecture of a border house that has learned it can lose a street of houses and still be a house, so long as the seat stands.
