Chapter 143

The Broken Watch-Log

also called the watch-log, the log of the fork

The Broken Lances' running log of everything that has crossed the castle-road fork below the Foldfast — carts, companies, couriers, and one recurring outlander whose movements between the Vale's delves are recorded with unsettling care.

Watch kept by order. Bearings from the high wall, hours by the count-candle. Log everything that crosses the fork. Underline what does not stop.

— Salt-cart up from Valenfeld, six hour. Stopped, paid the Hands, went on. Nothing. — Vandahl courier down the castle road, four hour, riding hard. STILL COMING. — A company of Old Lances, muster-strength, west. Did not look up at the walls. Good. — Grain-wagons, empty, returning. The granary's stripped, then. — An outlander. Alone. Came up from the direction of the flooded cut, blooded, carrying more than they went down with. Logged. Did not cross — turned back toward town. — The same outlander. Down toward the drowned adit this time. Logged. — The same outlander again, and again after. Barrow-ward, warren-ward, keep-ward. Always alone, always coming back up with more, always turning toward the town and not the fork. Berun says stop writing them down, they are only a delver. I keep writing them down. That was the order — log everything that does not stop, and this one does not stop. — Note for the relief: the outlander has not crossed the fork yet. When they do, it is the sixth hour, and you know what to do at the sixth hour.
